Bridge is a classic card game for four players, played in two teams of two. It’s a fun and challenging game that combines strategy, teamwork, and a bit of friendly competition.

  • Players take turns bidding and playing cards to win “tricks.”
  • The team that wins the bid tries to meet their goal, while the other team defends.
  • Each round involves skill, memory, and communication (without speaking!).
  • Bridge is great for keeping your mind sharp and enjoying time with others.

Bridge at Bykota:

Bridge at Bykota is not a class, so no registration is required.  There is no formal instructor, but other players are happy to teach new players, who are always welcome!

There are four sessions of bridge scheduled each week:

Beginners Bridge – Take the challenge and learn the basics of bridge in a casual and welcoming atmosphere. Learn basic opening and responding bids (major, minor, and no trump). Progress toward overcalls and doubles. Lesson 1 starts in September and then again in January.  Independent intermediate bridge is offered simultaneously.

    • Time and Location: Mondays, 10:00 – 12:00pm; Bykota 200-202
    • Moderator: Tom Fitzgerald

Contract Bridge — In contract bridge, the contract sets the number of tricks one team agrees to win and names the trump suit (or no trump if no suit is chosen). The other team works together to stop the contract.

      • Time and Location: Wednesdays, 12:30-4:00 pm, Bykota 200-202
      • Moderator: Ron Culbertson

Duplicate Bridge takes the luck out of the game. Scoring is then based on a comparison of scores of players playing identical cards.

    • Time and Location: Mondays, 12:30 pm-3:30 pm, Bykota 200-202
    • Moderator: Al Philips

Chicago/Duplicate Bridge is a popular variation of the card game contract bridge. It’s known for its relatively short, fixed number of deals (four).  Chicago rules scoring are a bit more complex and include contract points, overtricks points, level bonus for game and slams, part-score accumulation, undertricks, and honor points. Play, and stretch your brain muscle!

    • Time and Location: Fridays, 9:30 am-12:30 pm, Bykota 200-202
    • Moderator: Tom Wexler

Mahjong

Mahjong originiated in China in the 19th century. Its popularity has spread worldwide because it’s social, fun and good for your brain  because it involves elements of skill, strategy, observation and memory. The rules are somewhat complex, but game play is a balance of skill and luck and presents a continuous learning curve.

There are many regional variations of Mahjong including Chinese, Hong Kong, Japanese, and Filipino Mahjong.  At Bykota, we play American Mahjong.
